"If you think education is expensive,
try ignorance" is a recommendation of Derek Bok, author and former Director
of the Harvard University. Will the Germans try? The latest figures we have
to show the financial predicament of Germany’s universities date back
to 2001. But we’re all familiar with the plans the German Federal States
have to make savings of hundreds of millions in the tertiary sector while they
continue to wrangle over the label "elite university." Meanwhile,
primary school children and their parents are worried wether their classes are
preserved or not. At the same time some all-day schools are vociferously opened.
